1. Stating with Semantic portal.
Portal in computer science indicates the website that arranges and services according to the concept system on the web data on World Wide Web (www, including websites that can be expressed in web link and the contents that can be downloadable web page). But in the early computer period the term was restrictively used to explain the internet search and navigation site that provides starting point for information access and search in web. The term is also meant the search engine itself. Thenceforth, the terms of internet portal or web portal was used as a starting point for surfing as large sites appeared like Yahoo, Excite, Infoseek, Lycos, and these sites have provided more structural interfaces that navigation is possible in the way that may provide information of useful sites through web directory services that show structured and classified documents in addition to existing search engines.
As the function and roles of portal became more complicated, the portal is also defined in view point of personalized web which functions a single point that can provides information collected and classified from diversified sources. Portal is divided into horizontal portal that is targeted for total internet community like Naver, Nate, and Yahoo and vertical portal that is targeted for the specified subjects and contents. Especially, the vertical portal needs a more efficient support than horizontal portal because the vertical portal provides information and exchange spaces targeting specific communities who share concerned interests. In accordance with these needs, information share process should be improved through understanding and processing of meaning of data information sources by machine in the portal.
However, it is not easy to meet these needs in the existing web portal services because of the lack of defined knowledge system in the field of the portal to deal with. Ontology is the advanced type of knowledge system, and it may be defined as concept system that clearly provides relationships between concepts shared by specified concerned people. Utility of ontology has been proved in many fields by now such as information expression, information integration and system development and it is forecasted that the ontology will resolve many issues commented above by adaptation in the web portal. Ontology based web portal is actively and globally developed and constructed under the name of semantic web portal. Semantic web portal is said to provide dynamic ranking functions between web pages based on the unit knowledge of semantic relationship defined by ontology in addition to providing the search function based on semantics of unit knowledge forming contents from the point of information search and retrieval to users.
Semantic web suggested by Tim Berners-Lee expands its application fields globally. The portal that is to say the gateway for users to access on internet, especially, the semantic web portals are now spotlighted with intensive application of semantic web technology.
All the differences between web portals and semantic web portals are derived from the existence of ontology. In the semantic portal ontology schema is defined on target domain and all the service necessary domain contents are constituted as for the ontology instances. In other words, each of all the unit contents provided in portal service is connected to instance of a specific class on ontology schema. Furthermore, portal access should not be difficult for users without preliminary knowledge by providing schema browsing and instance search functions on ontology that is a conceptual and clear knowledge system.
